St Peter"s Slovak Catholic Church 90th Anniversary


	St. Peter’s Church, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada Oldest existing Slovak church in Canada Ninetieth Anniversary 1908 -1998

Introduction

The first wave of Slovak immigrants to Canada in the 1880s brought many men and women to Fort William and Port Arthur, Ontario on the northern shore of Lake Superior. These brave individuals, who were largely from the Orava region of what was then called Upper Hungary,became pioneer citizens of the fledgling towns (now combined into one city known


	as Thunder Bay). Their language, their common heritage and their strong religious convictions supported them and uplifted them in the often difficult new life they had chosen and were building for their families. This is the story of the Slovak-Canadians of the “coal docks” of Fort William, and of St.Peter’s Roman Catholic Church - the true heart of their lives and their gift to the generations who followed them.
