Father Joseph Stephen Reguly

Father Joseph Stephen Reguly was the descendant of  Slovak immigrants who came to Fort William at the turn of the century. He grew up in the neighbourhood which he was to become pastor to. A deeply prayerful man with a philosophical bent and a appreciation for the exuberance of youth, he worked closely with the Sisters of St.Joseph's to provide spiritual instruction for the children of St.Peter's School in addition to his regular responsibilities. He always included children in the special ceremonies related to the liturgical year with roles  in processions and  choirs, and always found a way for them to enjoy a special treat of candy or a Christmas party or summer

picnic. At his twenty fifth jubilee in 1968, the children reciprocated with a special song written in his honour. Father Reguly oversaw the church during the changes brought about through Vatican II, and developed a balance between the older traditions and the innovations of the 1960s and 70s.

Organist Helen Korcuska  continued her service from the 1940 into the 50s and sixties. A children's choir led by Sister Anthony Daniel was begun in the 1960s and was a feature of the 9:00 "children's Mass. The young people of the parish organized into the St.Peter's High  School Sodality . They devoted their time to raising money for charitable causes, to exploring spiritual and societal issues and  took a leadership role in planning Christmas parties and similar events for the younger children of the parish. They would also form the core of  the Janosikova Druzina Dancers , a Slovak dance group which formed in 1967 to celebrate Canada's Centennial Year. Father Reguly would become a Dean in the church, and often served as a role model and shepherd to novitiates and young priests who came to St.Peter's for part of their training. He had a deep appreciation of the history of the church, and of the heritage of his parishioners. He was to remain with his parish until falling ill in the late 1980s. There was a huge turnout to his wake service and funeral mass at St.Patrick Cathedral on October 21, 1988.
